1960 CADILLAC SERIES 6200 CONVERTIBLE
In 1957, Chrysler Corporation introduced tail styling that astonished the automotive world. Cadillac responded to this in 1959 with the boldest and most memorable design in its history. Although at the time considered extravagant, it became very popular and has made history as the most classic, most attractive Cadillac design.
The 1959 C-Body range was finally thought to be too extravagant by Cadillac designers. This gave birth to the tail styles of the 1960s with a much less striking, more restrained design. In fact, the 1960 Cadillac is a copy of the 1959 with make-ups. You just need to pay attention to two important changes to distinguish the 1960 Cadillac from the 1959. Lowered by just one-inch and given a more elegant look of tail with new taillights designed by Ed Taylor, the new design has no horizontal chrome trim in the front grille.
The two roof styles of the Series 6200, one straight and one curved for the two sedans, cannot be distinguished visually: only the small “Cadillac” script on the front fender in the premium DeVille range identifies it. This Ebony Black convertible in our Museum was one of 14,000 cars built in 1960. It sold for 5,455 Dollars, and was the most expensive model in the series.
The Series 6200 Convertible uses a 389.6 cu.in. 325 bhp 4800 rpm version of the GM 390 V8 engine, fed by a 4-barrel single carburetor. There was also a 345 bhp version with 3-double-barrel carburetors, using by Eldorado. The Hydra-Matic automatic transmission was standard for all Cadillacs: there were no transmission options. Known as the “Jetaway”, this column-shift transmission is a 4-speed. This Series 6200 Convertible was purchased at an auction in Florida and has undergone comprehensive restoration in our Museum.
