1968 ALFA ROMEO GIULIA SPIDER 1750 VELOCE
With a history dating back to 1910, Alfa Romeo is a brand renowned for its designs and the mastery of Italian body builders. Although some models could not be produced, due to the impact of Italy’s financial distress in the post-war era, this Giulia Spider with its distinctive design is known as a flawless Alfa Romeo sports car.
Introduced in 1963 with a very light monocoque body on the Giulia 105 chassis, the Spider was marketed with a 4-cylinder 93.3 cu.in. 109 bhp engine from 1966 to 1967. It remained in production for four generations until 1992. The first of the Spiders (Series 1), the Duetto, was replaced in 1967 by the Spider 1750 Veloce, and no longer used the name “Duetto”. Small make-ups were made to the body. The engine increased to 108.5 cu.in. and power was raised to 116 bhp, using twin carburetors in Europe and fuel injection in the United States. Brakes, suspension, electrics and wheels were improved. The exterior rear view mirrors were moved to the doors, while the small side fender lamps were relocated to the front of the fenders. In 1968, the Veloce was offered in two unique colors, one being Farina Red, as well as 49 colors offered on other Alfas. The only optional equipment was the detachable hardtop. Gaining popularity through its exposure in the American movie
“The Graduate”, the Giulia Spider was sold in the United States for 3950 Dollars, more expensive than the Lotus Elan or MGB. The example in our Museum was purchased in Turkey and restored.
