1975 BMW 3.0 CS

BMW failed to achieve the desired sales with its small Isetta and large 501-507 models introduced after the war. Following the company’s third financial crisis in 1959, sales soared with the launch in 1962 of the 1500-2000 series, called the “Neu Klasse” (New Class) models. Developing the engines in these series in 1968, the company introduced the 2500, 2800 and 3.0 sedans and their “CS” coupe models. The 2800 CS in our Museum is the first model of the 6-cylinder E9 platform manufactured with a Karmann-built body and revised frontal styling. This was effectively an enhanced version of the 2000 CS introduced in 1965, and was replaced by the 3.0 model in 1971.

With the 3.0 CS (181 cu.in.) in April, the 3.0 CSL in August and the 3.0 injection version CSi in June 1972, CS sales began strongly. In March 1975 the CS model sold for 34,720 DM, the CSi for 36,820 DM and the CSL for 40,880 DM. All 3.0 models offered an optional automatic transmission at an extra cost of 1,580 DM. With particular consideration given to low weight for racing, and equipped with a distinctive spoiler, the CSL used the 206 bhp engine in 1973, instead of the earlier 180 bhp engine.
