1939 FORD DELUXE CONVERTIBLE COUPE
In 1939 the 27-millionth Ford rolled off the production line. Production of the 1939 range began in November 1938. As had been the case the previous year, the Standard and DeLuxe series were introduced with a revised frontal appearance for 1939.
Eleven body styles, including two station wagons, was introduced. There were four Standard and seven DeLuxe series. The DeLuxe Convertible Coupe in our Museum, priced at 788 Dollars, stands out as the last convertible body with a “rumble seat” (servant’s seat in the trunk). The rumble seat, which grew unpopular for its exposure to wind and unfavorable weather conditions.
This year saw the production of the 6-millionth V8 engine and no changes to 1937’s engine range. The DeLuxe line used the large, 221 cu.in. V8 engine of the previous year. Built since 1932, output was reduced from 90 bhp to 85 bhp in 1937, with pistons made of light alloy steel material.
While the best-selling 1939 DeLuxe Tudor Sedan sold 144,333 at 742 Dollars, the DeLuxe Five Window Coupe became a firm favorite with Hot Rod fans and “Stock Car” racers.
All Fords featured double electric horn, lighter, ashtray and double rear tail light as standard. In addition, the DeLuxe line featured ammeter and battery charge lamp, ashtray in the back seat, clock, glove box lock, banjo type steering wheel and dashboard with mahogany pattern. The side view mirror, lockable fuel filler cap, chrome rims, deluxe wheel covers, tires with wide white wall and rear fender skirts were optional accessories for both lines.
