1962 MATCHLESS G12, 650 “Majestic”

Henry Herbert Collier and his sons Charlie and Harry manufactured various models ranging from small two-stroke engines to 45.7 cu.in. four-stroke motorcycles in Plumstead, south London from 1899 to 1966.

The G12 was one of the last bikes produced under the name of Matchless. It was designed by Phil Walker in September 1958, by improvement of the G11. Particularly popular in the U.S. market, the G12 remained in production from 1958 till 1966. The model was also produced under the name G12 “Hurricane 650” with the brand name AJS. Manufacturing of the Matchless ended in 1969.

Matchless produced thousands of 21.3 cu.in. G3 and G3L Lightweight motorcycles for the army during World War II. Their G12, luxury G12 DL model, G12 CS “Monarch” and G12 CSR (Competition Sport Road) lightweight aluminum and fiberglass racing models were also popular.

Sold for 275 Pounds in its first year of production, the G12 “Majestic”, using a twin-cylinder, 39.4 cu.in. OHV engine with a compression ratio of  7.5:1, was capable of a top speed of  100mph. It became the popular choice of Canadian police forces, and can now fetch 11,000 Pounds (17,000 Dollars) in perfect condition.

The V-Twin engine on this motorcycle was developed to work well with a sidecar. The engines on the British classic three-wheel Morgan automobiles were also manufactured by Matchless from 1933 to 1939.
