1972 MERCEDES-BENZ 280 SE 3.5

Mercedes’ popular “Ponton” model was in production from 1953 to 1962, but before it disappeared the new and completely redesigned W 111 series was launched in 1959. This was the distinctive “Heckflosse” series, known as the “Fintail” in English-speaking markets. Over the following eight years a total of 20,029 coupe and cabriolets were sold before production of this model in turn ceased in December 1967.

In July 1965, the new premium “S-class” range was introduced to replace the “Heckflosse”. This range included the sedans codenamed W 108 (the 250 S/SE and 300 SE) and W 109 (the 300 SEL, with a 3.94-inch longer wheelbase). The coupe and cabriolet models of the earlier series remained in production, based on the previous W 111 body.

In 1968, the S-class Mercedes models received improved engines. Replacing the 250, the new 280 received the M130 (169.5 cu.in.) engine. Delivering 140 bhp with a carburetor, the engine achieved 160 bhp and improved torque with fuel injection. This vehicle’s 3.5 liter V8 engine (213.3 cu.in.) provides 200 bhp, allowing the car to exceed 130 mph.

S-class Mercedes of this period offered leather upholstery, impact-dampened telescopic steering column with power steering, power brakes, double horn, a pocket inside the front door and ashtrays on rear doors as standard equipment. Automatic transmission, servo brakes and sun roof were available at extra cost.

Frequently used by the Ataman Family, this Mercedes’ powertrain, paint and upholstery were restored in the Museum’s facility in Istanbul.
