1965 CHEVROLET IMPALA SS CONVERTIBLE
In 1965, a new range of General Motors cars were introduced with new curved lines. The fourth generation of Impala, the Chevrolet B-Body again received great attention with this new design, built by Fisher.
This Impala Convertible is a 1965 example of the SS luxury and performance package offered from 1961 on. Super Sport (SS) models were offered for the optionally-equipped Hardtop Coupe and Convertible Impalas. The Regal Red SS Convertible in our Museum is equipped with a 327 cu.in. V8 (L74) Turbo-Fire engine, which cost an extra 138 Dollars. The engine looks the same as those fitted with the lower-spec 327 V8 and 283 V8 and uses an another “small block” V8.
Offered with 8 interior and 15 exterior colors, the Impalas featured padded dash and sun visors, external rear view mirror, two-speed windshield wipers, reverse gear lamp and central heater as standard equipment. With the “SS” logo and the 1965-modified “Super Sport” script on the body, this Impala Convertible’s price, with the standard 283 V8 Turbo-Fire engine, was 3,212 Dollars.
Mostly used as taxis in Turkey, this type of American automobile disappeared after about 1960, except for Chevrolet. After 1966, the 6-cylinder B-Body Impala in our Museum and its junior sisters the Bel Air and Biscayne were replaced as taxis by smaller, more economical domestic production brands. Purchased by the Museum in Turkey in 1988, this Impala SS Convertible was never used abroad. It has been fully restored; its chassis, body, suspension and mechanical systems and upholstery were completely renewed.
